GERMANY. Medallic Issues. Saxony. Silver Medallic 2 Talers, 1630. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. NGC MS-63.
Merseberger-1053. Commemorating the Centennial of Augsburg Confession. Obverse: Mantled bust of Johann facing, holding sword over shoulder and wearing elector's cap; Reverse: Inscription in 11 lines. A wonderful medal, this handsome piece delivers a stunning depth of relief that is seldom seen on issues of the period. Rather nicely struck and steely gray, the surfaces emanate with limited and soft brilliance, and essentially no traces of friction or marking are seen. An impressive specimen, and one that should suffer no shortage of excited bidders accounting from the strong details.

From the Augustana Collection.

Estimate: $600 - $900
