ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (7.94 gms), ca. 450-425 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 1/5. Edge Marks, Smoothing.
HGC-1, 759; Vlasto-185 (same dies); HN Italy-845. Obverse: Taras riding dolphin right, both arms outstretched; cockle shell below; Reverse: Oikistes seated left, holding distaff and scepter. A RARE earlier Tarentine Nomos. While numerous cleaning marks and scratches are noted on the fields, the coin retains quite well-struck details, better produced and preserved than typically encountered. The surfaces are nicely toned to a light gray color with an attractive sheen in the fields.
