ITALY. Lucania. Thourioi. AR Stater (Nomos) (7.83 gms), ca. 410-400 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.
HGC-1, 1259; HN Italy-1772; Jameson-355 (this coin). Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet decorated with olive branch; A above visor; Reverse: Bull butting left; below, bird alighting left; in exergue, fish left. This beautiful stater displays a well-centered portrait of Athena on its obverse. The reverse bull is quite impressive although its head is off-flan. At its feet, the tiny bird is intricately detailed. The fields retain some luster and the surfaces are attractively toned.
