MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III (the Great), 336-323 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.15 gms), Babylon Mint, ca. 324/3 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 3/5 Surface: 4/5. Overstruck.
HGC-3.1, 910Q; Pr-3654. Struck under Stamenes or Archon. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; kylix in left field; below throne, monogram above M. This well-centered Tetradrachm is overstruck upon another Alexander III type Tetradrachm. Some details from the original coin are visible, such as an eagle on the back of the head of Herakles and the outline of Herakles' face behind Zeus' back. Despite this, the overstrike is quite bold and delivers great details. An interesting and attractive example.
