ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.17 gms), ca. 454-404 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-4, 1597; Kroll-8. Likely a contemporary imitation from the Eastern Mediterranean. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. This nicely toned Tetradrachm shows plenty of attractive bold detail on both sides. A faint graffito is noted on the obverse. Because of the style of the dies, especially the reverse owl, this coin is probably one of the ubiquitous imitations struck in Egypt or the Near East during the height of Athens' economic strength. An interesting piece.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
Estimate: $400 - $600
