CILICIA. Tarsos. AE 19 mm, ca. 2nd-1st Centuries B.C. NGC Ch EF.
SNG von Aulock-5977; cf. SNG Cop-340. Obverse: Turreted head of Tyche to right; Reverse: Sandan atop back of horned lion-griffin standing to right between two omphaloi; all on a garlanded altar beneath a pyramidal baldachin. A nice example with deep green patina. Presents a charming turreted portrait of Tyche and sharp reverse details.

Sandan was an ancient Hittite deity, associated with Herakles in Hellenistic Cilicia. Every year, an effigy of Sandan was burned on a funeral pyre at a festival in Tarsus. The climax of this festival is depicted in intricate detail on the reverse of this coin.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Estimate: $70 - $100
