During his struggles against Carthaginian incursions on Sicily, Hieron II requested military assistance from his fellow Greek, the powerful Ptolemy II. As part of his response, Ptolemy provided Hieron with large amounts of bronze to help the latter pay his troops. Although the Syracusans faithfully minted this metal into coins in the name and type of Ptolemy II, the engravers produced the dies in the distinctive Sicilian style that is so esteemed by numismatists today. This short-lived issue stands apart within the broader Ptolemaic series.
