AUGUSTUS, 27 B.C.- A.D. 14. Syria, Antioch. AR Tetradrachm, Year 26 of the Actian Era and Cos. XII (6/5 B.C.). NGC Ch F. Scratches.
RPC-I, 4151; McAlee-180; Prieur-50. Obverse: Laureate head right; Reverse: Tyche seated right on rocky outcropping, holding palm frond; below, half-length figure of river-god Orontes swimming right; in right field, monogram and IB (consular iteration) above monogram. While surfaces are extensively scratched on both sides, this coin displays attractive deep gunmetal toning and a strong portrait of Rome's first emperor. An attainable but nevertheless appealing example of this ever-popular provincial type.
