VISIGOTHS. Time of Alaric II to Amalaric. Pseudo-Imperial Coinage. AV Tremissis (1.37 gms), ca. 491-518. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
Tomasini-A3, 65; Mateu y Llopis-15. In the name of Anastasius I. Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; large cross on chest; Reverse: Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond; COHOB. This well-produced piece of Gothic gold displays a sharp portrait of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius and legends which are fully readable, albeit slightly blundered. An interesting piece of charmingly crude barbaric style.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
Estimate: $500 - $750
