VISIGOTHS. Time of Alaric II to Amalaric. Pseudo-Imperial Coinage. AV Tremissis (1.38 gms), ca. 491-518. EXTREMELY FINE.
Tomasini-JI1, 163; Mateu y Llopis-25; VQR-4995. In the name of Justin I. Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; large cross on chest; Reverse: Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond; COHOB. This handsome Gothic Tremissis displays a fine portrait of the Byzantine emperor along with blundered but well-struck legends. The attractive golden surfaces offer much originality, though some minor marks are noted on the reverse.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
