VISIGOTHS. Time of Amalaric to Leovigild. Pseudo-Imperial Coinage. AV Tremissis (1.21 gms), ca. 527-565. EXTREMELY FINE. Flan Crack.
cf. Tomasini-JAN2, 247-77. In the name of Justinian I. Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; large cross on chest; Reverse: Victory standing right, holding wreath and palm frond; COHO. A RARE variety with a cross dividing the obverse legend at 12 o'clock. Likely struck in Spain, this beautiful Tremissis is extremely well-preserved, with sharp details of unique Gothic style. Despite the presence of a small flan crack around 1 o'clock, the coin was struck with obvious care. The somewhat blundered legends are crisp and readable, and the central devices are quite bold. The golden surfaces shine with plenty of luster. The thin flan is slightly wavy, as is typical. A highly alluring barbaric gold issue.
