BRITISH HONDURAS. Lot of (5). Bank of Poyais. Mixed Denominations, Mixed Dates. P-Unlisted. 1 Dollar Remainder & Bonds/Related. Fine & Very Fine.
A neat lot containing a 1 Dollar remainder from the failed settlement of Poyais, which was located in Honduras. The notes/bonds/land grants were issued by the Scotsman Gregor MacGregor. MacGregor tricked investors and settlers into investing into his fictional colony of Poyais, which was only a ruse to scam people out of money. MacGregor ran this scheme from 1821 to 1837, and attempted to draw in British and French investors/settlers. Many people invested into the bonds and land grants issued by Gregor, and about 250 emigrated to the fake colony between 1822 and 1823, only to find a remote jungle. More than half of the settlers died. The scam has been credited as a contributing factor to the Panic of 1825. Damage/issues are found on the included remainder and documents.

Estimate: $1500 - $3000
