MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (19mm, 8.55 gm, 11h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5. Posthumous issue of Memphis, under Ptolemy I Soter, as Satrap, ca. 323-311 BC. Head of Athena right, hair flowing loose, over left shoulder, and upswept at temple, wearing triple crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, wavy parallel crest ends, bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing facing, head left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; rose in outer left field, Δ in left field below wing. Price 3967. Extremely rare issue, only three examples noted by Zervos, and three in sales archives, including this one. Mellow surfaces on the obverse with areas of bright luster on the reverse.
