CYCLADES. Tenos. Ca. 260-240 BC. AR didrachm (21mm, 6.62 gm). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 5/5. Head of Apollo Carneius right / ΤΗΝΙΩΝ, Poseidon standing left, dolphin in outstretched right hand, grounded trident in left; bunch of grapes in left field. SNG Copenhagen 769. SNG Lockett 2631. Dewing 1970. Masterfully struck on superb flan with fiery red-gold toning. A magnificent example in hand.

Private Swiss collection prior to 2004; Herbert Kreindler, private sale (2002)

Among the rarest types of Cycladian coinage. The obverse was clearly heavily influenced by the Lysimachus types showing Alexander the Great wearing the horn of Ammon, while the reverse takes its inspiration from the Macedonian Kingdom types, but replacing Zeus and his eagle and scepter, with an island appropriate Neptune with dolphin and trident.
