Ancients
ANTIQUITIES. Roman Republic. Marc Antony (43-30 BC). Iron and bronze coin die (26mm long x 24mm wide, 56.40 gm). VF. Obverse die from Legionary issue, mint traveling with Antony in Greece (Aegae or Patrae), 32-31 BC. ANT•AVG• / III•VIR•R•P•C, war galley under oar right with triple ram prow and scepter tied with fillet. Iron areas with expected oxidation, face of die intact and excellent, showing expected wear from use.

Ex Artemis Gallery; Estate of Eldert Bontekoe; Triton V (15 January 2002), lot 1849

Ancient coin dies are exceedingly rare, and one from the traveling mint accompanying Marc Antony on his campaigns is especially desirable. The design remains quite clear and it's interesting to see areas of a slight silver sheen on the green patina.
