Gordian III, as Augustus (AD 238-244). AE bimetallic medallion (38mm, 56.13 gm, 11h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 2/5, Fine Style, smoothing. Copper and orichalcum, Rome, ca. AD 240-241. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FELIX AVG, laureate, cuirassed, half-length bust of Gordian III left, seen from front, two-part aegis over shoulders joined at Medusa head on breast, Victory right on globe in right hand, parazonium surmounted by eagle head grip in left; linear border / VIR-TVS AVGV-STI, Gordian III (mid-right), laureate and in military dress, seated left on cuirass and shields, transverse spear in lowered left hand, extending right hand to receive branch from Mars (far left), standing right, helmeted, shield on left arm, extending branch to emperor with right hand; Victory (far right), standing left behind Gordian, crowning him with right hand, palm in left, two soldiers (mid-left and center), standing facing, both with grounded standard in right hand, linear border. A new combination of known dies: Gnecchi pl. 106.2 (obverse) and pl. 106.10 (reverse). Well-struck from high-relief dies on massive flan. Exceptionally appealing in hand, with red and green patina.

The edge of where the two metals of the planchet join is mostly obscured by patina, but is visible at 10-12h on the obverse and at 11-2h on the reverse. The type was likely produced for the New Year's issues on AD 1 January 240 or 241, based on other die combinations.
