Menelik II gold Pattern Birr EE 1889 (1897) UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Addis Ababa mint, cf. KM-Pn5 (for type), Fr-Unl., Gill-M21. 34.06gm. A curious addition the to relatively scarce off-metal Pattern issues of Ethiopia, whose fractional denominations in gold are more frequently encountered at market than these full Birrs. While the weight difference between the current representative and that noted in Gill are fairly sizeable, it appears that even within the fraction issues discrepancies occur, placing this piece within the acceptable weight range for the type. Though examination from an angle reveals fine hairlines across the surfaces, this piece maintains the majority of its Mint State appeal and originality, with especially flashy recesses to the peripheries.
