Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Angel ND (1582) MS65 PCGS, Tower mint, Sword mm, Fifth issue, S-2525, Schneider-769, N-1991/1 (R). (Sword) ELIZABETH: D' • G' • ANG' • FR' • ET: HI' • REGINA, nimbate, armored figure of the Archangel Michael spearing the dragon (the devil) with cross-tipped staff / (Sword) A: DNO: FACTVM: EST: ISTVD: ET: EST: MIRABI' •, cross above Tudor shield over ship, E - rose to either side. Simply outstanding quality, not only for a type rarely encountered even in lower Mint State preservation, but across all of Elizabeth's hammered gold coinage. As well-struck as one is bound to find for the series, whose details in advanced designations almost exclusively become obscured by characteristic striking weakness. Practically as struck and clearly the result of having been tucked away for centuries, developing a mellowed golden patina along the way. Perfect centering and a full mint glow propel this representative to an elite tier, and as the sole finest can only be fully appreciated when viewed in hand.
