Charles II gold Proof Pattern Crown 1663 PR58 PCGS, KM-Unl., W&R-51 (R6), cf. ESC-355 (with 11 strings, there in silver), Montagu-824. Raised edge lettering. DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI XV ("An Ornament and a Safeguard Regnal Year 15") edge. By Jan (John) Roettiers. A fantastic milled rarity struck in the earliest years of Charles II's reign, even outweighing in scarcity the 1662 Pattern Crown we handled in 2021 as part of the Paramount Collection. Expertly designed by the skilled hand of Roettiers, who would quickly rise to become one of the Royal mint's chief engravers and would go on to produce pieces for James II, William II, and Mary until his death in 1703. Here represents the pinnacle of Roettiers's abilities, utilized on an expansive golden canvas with Charles II's iconic and sensitively rendered draped and laureate bust portrait. Witnessed at the cusp of an advanced assignment, offering commendable visual appeal for the grade designation - a consequence of balanced circulation wear that leaves a uniform expression of struck detail. Embellished by traces of residual mint luster concentrating to the protected recesses of the legends, while gentle, grade-defining handling is noted to the new King's youthful portrait. Only a single example of this Pattern has come to market in recent decades, when we offered the piece at hand in our 2019 NYINC auction, where it was among the night's top highlights. As such, we expect interest commensurate with the ever-expanding market for vintage British ultra-rarities.
