Great Britain
Charles II gold "Elephant" Guinea 1663 AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, KM420.2, Fr-288, S-3339, Farey-0015. First bust, elephant below. The new, milled coinage began distributing this year and the mint was instructed by a Royal Warrant that the coins struck from gold submitted by the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading to be distinguished by an addition of an elephant below the King's bust. Since the gold came from Guinea in West Africa, the name gradually got colloquially applied to such pieces. An exceedingly rare offering in soft, buttery yellow hue owing to the fine 22 carat gold used. A mark on his neck, in addition to some fine surface marks and wisps from handling noted for accuracy, otherwise this is a pleasantly detailed and practically perfectly centered example for an advanced collection of British Milled coins.
