George I gold 5 Guineas 1720 MS61 NGC, KM547, Fr-325, S-3626. SEXTO edge. An immensely seldom available date on the marketplace, this imposing piece grabs the attention of the most conditionally discriminating collector with the enviable constellation of the warm tangerine toning and the finely preserved features of the King's laureled bust. The legends are fully formed and nestling acute brilliance, further elevating the visual allure. A brief glance at the graded populations reveals only 4 examples in the PCGS census, and a further 8 in NGC, one of which is an overdate - and highest graded of them all being a single MS60. This piece certainly looks the part, with its surfaces devoid of any singularly significant detracting marks and only gentlest of wear over George's curls, rendering it very desirable as the 'pièce de résistance' of an ambitious Guinea collection.
Privately purchased from A.H. Baldwin in the early 1920s.
