George II gold "East India Company" 5 Guineas 1729 MS62+ NGC, KM571.2, S-3664, Schneider-556. TERTIO edge. EIC below bust. A sought-after one-year type struck from gold supplied by the East India Company, now recognized as a foundational emission for the then-burgeoning bullion market. The piece at hand represents this history with the upmost sophistication. Devices rendered from an exacting strike are visible in an appreciable state of preservation, the laureate bust appearing particularly well formed. Abundant gloss in the fields is practically inescapable to the eye, energizing the tiger's eye tone at the peripheries. Precluded from loftier heights due to minimal chatter in the devices, a small price in light of this selection's caliber.
Privately purchased from A.H. Baldwin in the early 1920s.
