George II gold Coronation Medal 1727 MS63 NGC, Eimer-510, MI-479-4. 23.95gm. 35mm. By J. Croker. GEORGIVS ٠ II ٠ D.G. ٠ MAG ٠ BR ٠ FR ٠ ET ٠HIB ٠ REX. his armored, draped and laureated bust left. VOLENTES ٠ PER ٠ POPULOS. - the legend on the reverse points to the peaceful succession of the King. Exergue: CORON. XI. OCTOB. MDCCXXVII. This is the official medal distributed at the public expense during the ceremony. It is said 200 were struck in gold, 800 in silver and a still greater number in copper. The wondrously three-dimensional bust of the newly anointed King is produced to exact calculation, where every element of the designs is set to impress the viewer. Notwithstanding the die polish lines, this example carries an aura of careful preservation, with it's hearty cognac patination glistening in a most inviting manner, allowing the features to project in clean contrast from the surrounding fields. An absolute must-have acquisition to an elite collection of British commemorative medals.
Privately purchased from A.H. Baldwin in the early 1920s.
