George III gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1817 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM673, S-3786, Marsh-400A (R3). The smaller denomination of first year emission for the modern sovereign, produced in the height of the Great Recoinage when pride was restored in British coin engraving. The fields of this superlative Proof appear as virtually jet-black mirrors, admitting only light hairlines in accordance with the assigned technical grade. Adding to the visual allure, the raised motifs are masterfully rendered by the engraver and embellished by majestic layers of golden frost. The exact mintage is not known and reference literature suffices with 'very few' minted, making this conditionally extremely rare survivor a prime candidate for the connoisseur cabinet.
