George IV Proof Crown 1826 PR63 PCGS, KM699, S-3806, ESC-2336 (R), L&S-28. SEPTIMO edge. From a minuscule original mintage of 150 pieces, this Proof-only emission with its spectacular reverse leaves to shame the modern efforts to replicate its grandiose flourish. At first glance the rich patination appears almost anthracite, but a good light and a turn of the wrist reveals delicate royal blue and stormy purple undercurrents permeating the glossy fields. Certainly a great rarity, and a superb addition to any ambitious cabinet of pre-Victorian coins.
