Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR64 Cameo NGC, KM744, S-3883, ESC-2571. UN DECIMO on edge. A type that needs no introduction, perhaps because one has been left speechless in its presence. Witnessed here with a pervading cabinet patina that throws sparks of mauve and cobalt from expanse to expanse, a firework show enjoyed by the young Victoria on the obverse, who is resolutely posed and rendered. A molasses tone creeps from the reverse peripheries, posing a mystifying contrast to brilliant highpoints on the quartered arms motif. Though the type seems to command limitless appreciation, distinctions of caliber must be acknowledged. Of the six elite examples with a Cameo designation on the NGC census, only two rank higher than this offering, an honor unlikely to go unnoticed by serious bidders.
