Great Britain
Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1853 UNC Details (Altered Surfaces) PCGS, KM744, S-3884, ESC-2584. SEPTIMO edge. A far rarer date than the massively popular 1847 issue, the 1853 "Gothic" Crown was only issued as a part of the enigmatic Proof sets that contain arguably the rarest British pre-decimal coinage ever produced. Thorough examination of the obverse reveals largely matted open surfaces perhaps indicative of an earlier attempt to remove residue, and some fine circular hairlines on her bust. The reverse central areas admit patches where the toning appears to be removed, whereas the fields are covered with beguiling petroleum blue patination. Regardless of the conditional modifier this is a very rare opportunity to acquire this genuine rarity to an ambitious collection, and an offering that doubtlessly will be met with keen bidder enthusiasm.
