Republic gold "Veld" Pond 1902 AU58 NGC, Pilgrims Rest mint, KM11, Fr-4, Hern-Z54. Struck during the Second Boer War by Boer forces on the run from the British, set up in the veld (long grass) of Pilgrims Rest in northeastern Transvaal. Just 986 pieces of this type were manufactured to pay soldiers, and the majority were handled, spent or placed into jewelry after the conflict concluded, rendering only a limited few available in straight technical grade to collectors of South African and World rarities looking to add this historically intriguing type to their cabinets. This flaxen yellow offering admits a planchet crack on the obverse, otherwise it appears sparingly handled and without evidence of singularly significant instances contact.
