Pius XI gold Specimen "Governor's Palace" Medal Anno VI (1927)-Dated SP67 PCGS, cf. Rinaldi-121 (unlisted in gold). 47mm. 50.80gm. By Aurelio Mistruzzi. PIVS XI PONT MAX AN VI his bust left / SEMINARIO MIN ROM AD VAT AMPLIANDO Seminary building later used as Governors palace, in exergue, LAPIS AVSPIC P / A MCMXXVII. An design we have encountered encountered a handful of times over the years, but never in gold. Likely struck as a presentation piece for the Pope himself or for close Cardinals, this captivating jewel wears blazing mirrors and heavily frosted motifs that juxtapose in a manner arguably deserving of a Cameo designation. The exactingly rendered, high-relief portrait and façade leap into the viewer's space, tempting one to linger and imagine which dignitaries have imbibed this visual splendor in years past.
