Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great) (48 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.89 gm, 9h). NGC AU 3/5 - 5/5. Posthumous issue of uncertain mint in Sicily (Catania?), ca. 42-40 BC. MAG•PIVS•IMP•ITER, bare head of Pompey Magnus right; oenochoe right behind, lituus right before / PRAEF (AE ligate) / CLAS•ET•ORAE• (AE ligate) / MARIT•EX•S•C (MAR ligate), Neptune standing left, aplustre in right hand, right foot on prow, between the Catanaean brothers, each carrying a parent on their shoulders. Crawford 511/3a. Sydenham 1344. Pompeia 27. Splendid deep cabinet toning throughout, with hints of rainbow coloring on the obverse and plum hues on the reverse as the coin catches the light.
