CAESAR-AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus right; dotted border / SIGNIS / RECEPTIS, round shield inscribed CL•V between aquila (on left) and signum (on right); S-P/Q-R around, linear border. RIC I 86a. Boldy struck from high relief obverse die on satiny flan.
Among the honors voted by the Roman Senate in 27 BC to Augustus was the Clipeus Virtutis, or shield of valor, which was given, along with branches of laurel, to a soldier who had saved the life of a comrade in battle.
