Fernández, Fernández & Calicó, Catálogo Monográfico de los Denarios de la República Romana (2002), 1 (this coin). Radiant cabinet toned specimen with backlight luster showcasing nacreous undertones.

Ex Santana Collection; Alba Longa Collection (Áureo & Calicó, Auction 339, 14 November 2019), lot 1060

The laureate male head on the reverse little resembles lifetime coin portraits of Julius Caesar, but the presence of the "Julian comet" above his head leaves little doubt as to the identity of the portrait. As Augustus was celebrating the commencement of a "New Age" with the Saecular Games of 17 BC, it is likely the elder Caesar is shown as "rejuvenated" (literally "made young again") to mark the occasion.
