Cilician Armenia. Levon I (1198-1219) Denier ND (c. 1208) AU Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC, Sis mint, CCS-133b (under Antioch), Bed-10. 1.00gm. + RЄX ARMENOR (ME ligate), crowned head facing / + LЄO DЄI GRATIA, cross pattée. A seldom-seen Armenian portrait issue struck in concordance with the Antiochene rather than the Armenian standard. It has been supposed that this type may have been produced by Levon in anticipation of his capture of Antioch, at which he had nearly succeeded in 1203. Presenting bold, wholly-original surfaces with a dark gunmetal tone and earthen crevices.
