João VI 960 Reis 1820-R UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM326.1, LMB-478. Struck on a Colonial 8 Reales with British Honduras 6 Shillings 1 Penny block letter "GR" counterstamp (KM-Unl., Prid-Unl., cf. Roehrs Collection Part 1 Lot 6 (same stamp), Levy-RG.10). An extremely elusive host, of which only a handful have been auctioned in the last couple of decades, while Levy suggests 5-7 pieces are known as hosts for 960 Reis. Only the second example we have located other than Levy's plate coin. A very important issue for British numismatics, since it's said to have authenticated the once doubtful block letter stamp, after it was spotted under a Brazilian type. Previously, the far more common cursive GR was thought to be the only authentic stamp, the example offered being one of the survivors that changed such belief. Presenting long-ago cleaned surfaces with well-defined motifs and a subtle cabinet tone.
