KAROLS • DI • GR | FRAnCORV • RЄX (saltire stops), crowned, mantled figure of Charles standing facing beneath a Gothic dais, sword in right hand, scepter surmounted by Hand of Justice in left / +XPC • VIИCIT • XPC • RЄGИAT • XPC • IMPЄRAT (mullet stops), cross fleury with crowns and lis alternating in angles within quadrilobe, attenuated trefoil in center, lis in spandrels. A tremendous emission likely produced in the early years of the king's reign. The motifs evince a captivating degree of detail, a clarity enhanced by the original bloom that continues to enliven the flan. Tied for the top position at PCGS.
