George VI gold Specimen "Coronation" Medal 1937 SP61 PCGS, Eimer-2046a, BHM-4314. 57mm. 120.1gm. By Percy Metcalfe. Certified as Specimen but there is no distinction to the Proof designation that the grading agencies use interchangeably for this spectacular large-format gold coronation medal, produced to a scant mintage of just 274 pieces of this size in total. The expansive planchet depicts a pair of sensitively rendered and frosted portraits of a crowned George and Elizabeth, set atop the flashy canvas. A minor scattering of light wisps and a scratch to obverse hold this imposing representative from attaining a higher technical grade. This is only the fourth specimen of this size we have handled in the past 5 years, and highly covetable as such. Accompanied by the appropriate red case of issue, this in good condition.
