Guatemala
Republic silver "Independence" Medal ND (1821) MS63 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, Fonrobert-7206, Stickney-M51 (this coin). 42mm. By José Casildo España. An intriguing independence medal, struck in commemoration of the September 15, 1821 declaration of independence that broke Central America from Spain. Seldom-seen and desirable in silver, the example offered here endures in a highly appreciable and never-seen quality. Certainly among the finest of this vintage and deserving of advanced bids.

According to Rubio Sanchez and Stickney, local authorities in Guatemala authorized the striking of only 100 silver and five gold medals celebrating Guatemala's (Central America's) independence. Bancroft, in his History of Central America (vols. VII and VIII, pg. 44), reports that the five gold medals were supposedly awarded to give key members of the city council most responsible for issuing the declaration of independence.
