The Thracian-Macedonian tribe of the Derrones inhabited inland Paeonia. On this piece we see a solar symbol above the legend and a crested Corinthian helmet as military symbol in front of the oxen. The meaning and the context of the Derrones' dodekadrachms continue to be subject of debate. The male figure who is driving the ox cart is most likely the tribal king. These coins were considerably larger and heavier than other Greek and Persian denominations, pointing to the rich silver deposits in the region; in fact these Archaic coins could also be viewed as stamped silver ingots.
