BRAZIL: Dom Pedro II, 1831-1889, AE 20 réis, 1889, 28mm medallic issue struck at the Brussels Mint with reeded edge for the Second German Shooting Fest in Rio Grande do Sul; Emperor's bearded head and Latin titles of the regular coinage // crossed rifles and target, German-Portuguese legend, II DEUTSCHES BUNDESSCH. IN SANTA CRUZ, PROV. RIO GRANDE DO SUL 1889, a superb specimen example! PCGS graded Specimen 65 BN. Santa Cruz do Sul was founded on March 31, 1877 by German immigrants, most of whom came from Hunsrück. Even today, the so-called Riograndenser Hunsrückisch is spoken actively in the area around the city. This type was struck in the last year of Dom Pedro's long and progressive reign. This example is much nicer than the example in the Eliasberg Collection.
