BRITISH INDIA: AE medal (59.17g), 1793, Pud-792.1.2, 48mm bronze medal for the Defeat of Sultan Tippoo [Tipu] of Mysore by C.H. Küchler, uniformed bust of the Marquis Cornwallis left with CAR MARCHIO CORNWALLIS STRATEGUS ACERRIMUS around // Cornwallis receives the sons of Sultan Tippoo as hostages with FAS SIT PARCERE HOSTI around and SULTAN TIPPOO DEVICTO / OBSIDES RECIPIT / MDCCXCIII in exergue, glossy chocolate-brown color, some contact marks, plain edge, About Unc. The Third Anglo-Mysore War (1789-1792) ended in defeat for Tipu Sultan. After about two weeks of siege at Srirangapatna, Tipu opened negotiations for terms of surrender. In the ensuing treaty, he was forced to cede half his territories to the allies, and deliver two of his sons as hostages until he paid in full three crores and thirty lakhs rupees fixed as war indemnity to the British for the campaign against him. He paid the amount in two installments and got his sons back from Madras.
