Kusunoki Masashige was a samurai in the 14th-century who served Emperor Go-Daigo in the Genko War. The Genko war was a civil war that led to the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. Masahige's role in this conflict is now regarded as the ideal of samurai loyalty. He posthumously received the highest decoration from the Meiji government of Japan in 1880. A statue in this same style and design (quite likely the exact statue depicted on the obverse) is located near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
