Saudi Arabia, Nejd (c. 1918), countermarked coinage (2); 20-Piastres on Maria Theresa Thaler, on Egyptian Ottoman 20-Piastres, 1293/ 22, both countermarked Nejd in Arabic on obverse, (KM A12, 14), host coins good very fine and fine, countermarks crisp, good very fine (2).
Following the defeat of the Ottomans in 1916, silver coins of various sizes were countermarked for circulation in Nejd. The countermark was deliberately placed over the Turkish Tughra or face of the previous issuer on the obverse to mark the change of rule.
It is thought that these countermarks were applied by local silversmiths to prevent the export of this much-needed silver currency. As this countermarking was privately executed some overstrikes are considered spurious.
Estimate: £200 - £300
