ANGLO-GALLIC. Richard I. 1189-1199. AR Denier (18mm, 0.79 g, 3h). Issoudun mint. Struck 1195-1199. Short cross pattée / Large m with macron above and annulet below. AGC 331, 1/a; SCBC 8010. Toned, thick deposit on obverse. VF. Extremely rare – only two examples on CoinArchives.

From the West Collection, purchased from Gordon A. Singer.

Issoudun came into the domain of the Plantagenets following the Treaty of Gaillon in 1195. A rare issue of deniers was struck here before the city was returned to French control in 1200, when John gave the territory to Blanche of Castile on her marriage to Louis of France.
