"LOVE" TOKENS. William & Mary Halfcrown engraved for M. Setchell, 4 June 1808. AR Love Token. "1689" engraved on obverse, reverse worn smooth and engraved "M/ SETCHELL/ June 4th/ 1808" within wreath. Lightly toned. Host Fine.
An 1808 London directory lists an M. Setchell, bookseller, at 23 King Street, Covent Garden, who is presumably Henry Setchell, bookseller and stationer active at that address in the early 19th century. If this is the individual our token was engraved for, the occasion is forgotten. Nevertheless, the wreath and date on the reverse suggests a particular occasion other than the usual birth or death, and the unusual 1689 date engraved on the obverse implies some relation to the Glorious Revolution
