Ireland, Tipperary, Cloughjordan, William Hodgins, penny, 1858, BANKER, rev. rose, thistle and shamrock (Batty [in 1869] 906; Macalister 610), nearly very fine
Hodgins, a land-owning nurseryman, became a father to children born at Cloughjordan House in the period 1859 to 1873; he died there in 1913, aged 90. The first recording of the token was as Australian, by Neumann in 1863, the only comment then being that the bouquet device resembled that on the 1857 pennies of M. Somerville of Auckland, New Zealand. Since Neumann the tokens have been claimed to have circulated in Australia by some British and Australian authors past and present, though no evidence for this has been uncovered by the present cataloguer. Both the Hodgins and Somerville tokens are feasibly productions of W.J. Taylor's manufactory in Holborn, London.
*ex Baldwin's vault.

Estimate: 50 - 70 GBP
