Germany, Brunswick-Luneburg, Ludwig-Rudolph, 2-Ducats, 1732 D BID, Ludwig Rudolph facing right, Brunwick mint, rev. Wildmen standing with crest with date to the right, smooth edge, 6.81g, 1h (Welter 2425; Fb. 682; KM 824), surfaces smoothed and cleaned, otherwise struck details a bolder very fine, very rare.
As the fourth son of Anton Ulrich, Ludwig Rudolf had little chance of succeeding to the throne, so he prepared himself for a military career. In the Battle of Fleurus in 1690 he was taken prisoner by the French, but was soon released. Upon his return, he received the county of Blankenburg, although this violated the indivisibility of the lordship. He married Christine Luise von Oettingen-Oettingen and had four daughters with her who were married by his father Anton Ulrich, e.g. with the later Emperor Charles VI, who was a younger brother of Emperor Joseph I. As a result, the county was upgraded to a principality in 1707. After the childless death of his brother August Wilhelm in 1731, Ludwig Rudolf took over the rule of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. The most urgent task was to get the household back on track. Ludwig Rudolf died in 1735. His motto was "EX ADVERSO DECVS" - out of adversity comes fame
