The Robert P Ball Cabinet of Ancient Coins | Sicily, Messana (as Zankle), AR Drachm, c. 520-493 BC, Dolphin left, DANKLE below, sickle-shaped harbour of Zankle surrounds, all within beaded border, rev. scallop shell within nine-part incuse pattern, 7h (Boston MFA 285; Kraay & Hirmer 49; SNG ANS 302; SNG Lloyd 1076; HGC 2, 766), some horn silver to peripheries of reverse and striking raggedness to edge, otherwise a beautifully crisp ZANKLE reading and dolphin further accentuated by sympathetic cabinet toning, a pleasing very fine, scarce.
