The Robert P Ball Cabinet of Ancient Coins | Sicily, Messana, AR Tetradrachm, c. 420-413 BC, MESSA-[NA], the nymph Messana driving slow biga of mules right, kentron in left hand and reins in both, two dolphins confronted in exergue, rev. MES-SA-NI-O-N around hare springing right, dolphin right below, all within beaded edge, 1h (SNG ANS 362 var.; HGC 2, 792; Caccamo-Caltabiano Series XIV, 519, dies D208/R230A; SNG Lloyd -; SNG Copenhagen -), some die-wear to highest points, nevertheless beautifully centred and lightly toned on a neat round flan, this further accentuated by colourful irisdescence in recesses, a most pleasing very fine, an iconic issue, rarely found in this presentable state.
