Charles I silver "Birth of James II" Medal 1633 AU53 NGC, MI-268-65, Eimer-126b. 30mm. By Nicolas Briot. Obv. Arms of Prince James with Ducal coronet above an oval shield. Rev. Inscription with a wreath of roses and lilies. Struck to commemorate the birth and baptism of Prince James. James's birth date was October 14, but this piece incorrectly dates his birth as October 15. Admitting some weakness to the strike and dark toning, the eye appeal here is bolstered by a salvo of color underlying the devices. From the Abbeygate Collection of British Medals
