"Four Days Battle" white metal Medal 1666 MS63 NGC, MI-522-169, Eimer-238. 69.5mm. By C. Adolfszoon. Obv. Half-length armored bust of de Ruyter, turned slightly to left, wearing cravat and Collar and Badge of the Order of St. Michael. Rev. Naval engagement with billowing smoke, ship burning in foreground. One of the most famous and skilled admirals in Dutch history, Michiel de Ruyter is best known for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the mid-17th century, in which he scored several major victories. The so-called "Four Days Battle" epitomizes the naval strength of the British and Dutch and the tensions that wracked their imperial commercial interests. This remarkably preserved specimen displays the original majestic design and full strike. Teel hues around the peripherals add further visual appeal to this singular-registered example at either grading service, which is more frequently witnessed in silver and garnering impressive sums. Impressive in all regards, especially with so few in white metal extant. From the Abbeygate Collection of British Medals
